Detroit 2009: Ford demos MyKey

Few people in favor of government-mandated speed limiters, but the public at large has less of a problem if the limits are set on teenage drivers (apparently, that Orwellian pill goes down a lot smoother -Ed.). Ford is adding a new technology called MyKey to new 2010 model vehicles beginning with the Focus coupe. The new key tech enables parents to place limits on the family car, but only for those that use the MyKey fob. Parents can set the speed limit to 80 mph, add chimes at 45, 55, or 65 mph, limit radio loudness, and and turn off the radio when seat belts aren't fastened. Teenagers won't like this system, but it's designed for parent's peace of mind.

We got a chance to demo the system with Ford MyKey chief engineer Tom Miller, and we've prepared a short video for your perusal. It shows how to program a key, what settings can be chosen, and how some of the features work. MyKey may not be a big hit with the 16-21 crowd, but we've got a good feeling that parents will love it.

Detroit 2009: Revenge Designs builds you a supercar for $145K

|

Click above for gallery of pics of the Revenge GTM-R from Detroit

Up until now, Indiana-based Revenge Designs focused on body kits for the Honda Ridgeline, Pontiac Solstice and the Pontiac GTO, but here in Detroit, the company unveiled its first complete vehicle: the Revenge GTM-R. If the car looks familiar that's because you've seen something similar badged as the Factory Five Racing (FFR) GTM. Since Factory Five offers the car in kit form only, Revenge seems to have spotted a niche and exploited it by offering a fully built turnkey example and has teamed with FFR to develop bespoke components for their version of the fully-built supercar.

Where the Factory Five kit allows a range of GM engine options, Revenge has focused on just the LS7 V8 from the Z06 Corvette. Not a bad mill to settle on, but it comes at a hefty price. While the kit will cost you around $20,000 (although there's a $2K off special right now), Revenge is asking $145,000 for their GTM-R. Granted, there are a lot of other parts you need to supply for the FFR kit (engine, trans, suspension, etc.), and you have to have the skill, patience and tools to build it yourself, but a $125,000 markup might seem steep to some. Still, the car looks well-built and at 2,550 lbs., it's bound to be a rocketship. Even at $145,000, this could be one of the performance bargains of 2009.

Detroit 2009: Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S is a mouthful

|

Click above for high-res image gallery of the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S

Maserati says that its new Quattroporte Sport GT S "sets another milestone in terms of sportiness in the high performance luxury sedan segment," and it also appears to be trying to set a record for one car's syllable allotment. Suitable then that it takes more than just a couple of changes to be able to append that "S" to the regular Quattroporte Sport GT.

Torque remains the same, but the 4.8-liter V8 is cranks out 433 hp, eight ponies over the regular model. And you get that horsepower a tad later - the engine's rev limit is 7,200 rpm, but you won't get every one of those ponies in action until 7,000 rpm. The transmission software has also been recalibrated for more engaging shifts in three different modes. The suspension has been lowered, stiffened, and imbued with passive damping for higher cornering speeds and improved response. And the sport exhaust has pneumatic valves that render a "deep, throaty, and captivating sound" through large, twin-oval tailpipes.

Aesthetically, the Maser's big black snout gets concave vertical fins and a trident with red trim, the headlights are finished in metallic titanium, and the door handles are body-colored. Inside, new M-design seats come in perforated leather paired with Alcantara, and a standard trim called Titantex, which must have come from the marketing department. Slightly cheesy, but definitely beautiful. The entire package sits on 20-inch wheels. You can read all about it in the press release after the jump, and check out the gallery of high-res photos below.

Detroit 2009: Ford announces full pricing for 2010 Taurus

|

Click above for high-res live images of the 2010 Ford Taurus

After Ford revealed the new 2010 Taurus this morning at the Detroit Auto Show, it sent out a press release with full pricing information for each model. As we mentioned earlier, the base price of Ford's new flagship sedan in SE trim is the same $25,995 as the 2009 model. For those looking for more toys in their car, Ford is still offering the SEL and Limited models at $27,995 and $31,995 respectively. The two upper trim levels can be had with paddle shifters for the 6-speed automatic, a first for the Taurus. We'll probably have to wait until closer to launch to find out how much goodies such as the cross traffic warning system, adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation will cost. The other big unknown remains the cost of the EcoBoost 3.5L V6 and its 350 hp. That's a Taurus we can't wait to try.

First “Entry Level” Ferrari California Sold For $500k

|

Although not scheduled to make its first official appearance until next week at the Paris auto show, the first “baby” Ferrari California was sold at an auction recently for nearly double its projected retail value. Hosted by California Governantor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the auction was held to benefit the After School All Stars program, an initiative which dispenses funds to underprivileged school children. Held in both Maranello, Italy and Santa Monica, California, the charity event successfully hauled in a significant chunk of change for California’s disenfranchised demographic, ultimately awarding the coveted pre-production baby Ferrari to the highest bidder for an estimated $520,000. Since it’s for a good cause, I’ll refrain from making any of the usual remarks about the obviously insignificant size of the buyer’s genitals.[News Source: Auto Unleashed]

Consumer Reports has announced that the 2009 Hyundai Genesis has managed to take the top score in its list of upscale sedans.

The Genesis managed to beat out 4 other new sedans this year, the Pontiac G8, Acura TL, Nissan Maxima and Lincoln MKS in addition to just outscoring the Lexus ES350.

Consumer Reports had this to say about the V6-powered Genesis:

"Spacious and well appointed, the rear-wheel-drive Genesis offers good value and is a compelling alternative to luxury vehicles costing thousands more. "

More good news for Hyundai!

Mitsubishi Soldiers On With Lancer Evolution MR

|

Lancer Evolution MR
Lancer Evolution MR

Despite Mitsubishi’s difficulties from the very beginning in making much if any headway financially in the U.S., the Tri-Diamond has held fast with their committment to make a go of it in America.  Likewise, Mitsubishi’s approach for the last several years to their performance models is equally consistent and exemplified in the latest example in the Evo line; the Lancer Evolution MR.

2008 Lancer Evolution
2008 Lancer Evolution

Following delays to the advanced tuning of the MR, the Mitsu dynamo has been in showrooms since June and by almost universal accounts is an incredibe vehicle.  One way you can gauge a car’s fun-factor is how much time a reviewer spends talking about cupholders and electronic gizmos inside.  With the MR interior appointments are essentially irrelevant and a mere footnote to the way it handles and moves.  In almost all ways aesthetic, the car varies only slightly, but distinctly, from the lower Lancer model.  Outside the Evo has a big, dark trapezoidal grille, three hood scoops and a big wing and Evolution badge on the back.

Aggressive Evo Snout
Aggressive Evo Snout

Inside, the Evo gets leather and suede Recaro bucket seats that are DEFINITELY a must given the cars cornering abilities and differs from the Lancer’s back seats, which do not fold down because the battery and washer fluid have been moved to behind them to make room for the most significant difference in the two cars; the engine.

Evolution Engine
Evolution Engine

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged and inter-cooled engine produces 291 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque which in relation to the car’s displacement is phenomenal and is mated to a slick six-speed twin-clutch Sportronic shift transmission.

Twin Clutch Transmission
Twin Clutch Transmission

While 0-60 times are achieved in the 5.2 seconds range and the car can reach over 160 mph, the car’s real forte is in it’s handling and braking capabilities.  According to testers, pulling in and out of slides is a piece of cake in the all-wheel-drive Evo, only requiring a steely resolve to continue pushing the gas and not jumping on the brakes; the car’s capacity to get itself pointed in the right direction will do the rest.

Evolution Interior
Evolution Interior

Not that practicality is a huge consideration for those interested in this car, but despite a limited trunk and fold-down rear seats, it can seat 4 in relative comfort making it not a completely frivolous vehicle.  But assuming you will be driving it with a moderate amount of aggression it does suck down gas (17 mpg combined) and eat tires at an accelerated pace.  And it is pricey, starting at $38,940 and approaching 50 grand with all the bells and whistles.  However, I will note that in terms of performance the Evo MR delivers a better and more affordable overall driving experience than the similar offerings from BMW and Mercedes.

Man Slapped With Littering Fine After Throwing Beer Can Out Car Window, With Video Bonus

|

In Mississippi Mills, police officers stopped a man under the suspicion of driving under the influence after a can of beer was tossed from the window. According to the OttoawaCitizen.com, the Lanark County officers had been monitoring traffic with a radar gun when Terry Samek drove past, throwing an open container of beer from his window. Apparently, the open container landed right in front of the cruiser. Astutely observing that Samek could possibly be driving drunk, the officers pursued the vehicle. When Samek was finally pulled over a short distance away, he was charged with littering and having an open container of alcohol in his motor vehicle.

Not specifically related to the above story, but an oldie but goodie in the world of funny DUI videos.

2009 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak Available For Order, Long-Haired Freaky People Need Not Apply

|

Yesterday, Jalopnik posted about Mopar’s unveiling of the 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, which one commenter pointed out appeared to have been designed for “the man with a switchblade in his sock and only one testicle” [which I personally found to be uproariously funny and dead-on-balls accurate]. The Mopar Challenger Dragster is serious business though, and Mopar actually requires all potential buyers to fill out an application before getting behind the wheel, presumably to screen out those who aren’t man enough [a tobacco spitting contest is included in phase 2 of the review process].

Mopar also suggests that all potential buyers have hold a competition driver’s license, but, as another Jalopnik commenter pointed out, a New Jersey or Michigan driver’s license will pass as a sufficient substitute. Although I jest in my usual smartass vein, Mopar’s somewhat unusual precautions isn’t merely pomp and circumstance, the ‘09 Mopar Challenger Drak Pak has some serious power. About 800lbs lighter then the stock Dodge Challenger SRT8, the Mopar Challenger is offered with 3 engine options: a 5.7L HEMI, 6.1L HEMI, or a 5.9L Magnum Wedge - all available with either manual or automatic transmission. Officially introduced back in July at the 29th Annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals, the 2009 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drak Pak became available for order on September 8, 2008. Only 100 models of the Mopar edition Challengers will be produced, but surprisingly, the Manufacture Suggested Retail Price is in the reasonable $30,000-$35,000 range. Unfortunately, buyers will have to supply their own Bic lighters and Kid Rock albums.

Tuner creates 1000-horsepower Porsche 911... with bolt-ons.

|

Click above for a high-res gallery of the SPI Sledgehammer

Most stock components in a production car can only be pushed so far. Keep adding horsepower and torque, and eventually...well, something is going to break. Some people, however, are all about exploring the limits. Take Tym Switzer, for example. His tuning company, Switzer Performance Innovation of Oberlin, Ohio has come up with a bolt-on tuning package for the Porsche 997 911 Turbo that offers Bugatti Veyron aping performance. So, how much power can the stock internals in Stuttgart's 3.8-liter flat-6 take? Apparently, quite a lot.

The shop has recorded 850 horsepower and 727 lb-ft of torque on the rolling dyno, equating to over 1000 horsepower at the crank. Real world performance should be mind boggling, with the car reportedly reaching 60 miles-per-hour in the mid two second range, blowing through the 1/4 mile in just 9.79 seconds at 146 mph. Pricing looks to be just as fierce, with the Sledgehammer package retailing for $49,990. While that's a lot of coin for a suite of bolt-ons, the performance would appear to speak for itself. Videos of both the dyno run and the 1/4 mile pass can be viewed after the jump as well as SPI's official press release.
