Pure Stock Preview

Now that Terry and I have returned from Michigan, it’s time to focus not only on the next issue of Muscle Machines, but also sift through the thousands of photos we took of the 2009 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags at Mid-Michigan Motorplex. Briefly, 146 muscle cars attended this year’s race, and if you’ve never been, it’s a far different event that one would expect. It begins on Friday; a day-long qualifying session. At the close of the day, drivers are paired up based on average ETs. Saturday is kicked off with a quick warm-up session, followed by a lunch break and arranging the pairs in the staging lanes. It’s not a king-of-the-hill race; the pairs race continuously for a maximum of three rounds, with lane swaps each round. Best two out of three wins, and we can tell you that this year’s event was very competitive throughout all the match-ups.

Amanda Camaro

Amanda Waligora, in just her third race, was able to capture two out of three behind the wheel of her (mid-year) 1970 Chevy Camaro; her best over the weekend was a 13.19 ET at 105 MPH.

Dale chevelle

Her father, Dale, also captured two out of three with his 1970 Chevelle with a 12.39 at 113 MPH. While Amanda’s Camaro is powered by a 396, Dale’s Chevy envelopes a LS6 454.

steve gt-37

If this 1971 Pontiac GT-37 looks familiar, it’s because we’ve featured Steve Courter and the saga of his car in the pages of Muscle Machines (issue #67, April 2009). We couldn’t help capturing him coming off the line during qualifying; he ran a best of 14.52 that day. But during Saturday warm-ups, he ran a personal best of 14.30, which he backed up during his first race with a 14.32. In the end, Steve also took two out of three.

We plan on having more details in an upcoming issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines – stay tuned!
