* Kaiser wasn’t done designing cars in 1955, as we see from this set of three 1958 ads from Kaiser Aluminum showcasing the possibilities for all-aluminum vehicles. The designs – the Menehune, the Pele and the Waimea – are sufficiently futuristic for the late 1950s; we’re just left wondering who rendered them. (high-res versions available here)
* What’s up with the Star Trek-related posts lately? First we had Kirk driving his stepdad’s Vette in the latest movie, then we came across the fact that the original Enterprise’s modeler was a car guy, now Bob’s Dream Car Garage highlights an episode – “A Piece of the Action” – from the original series in which Kirk and Spock take a V-12 Cadillac for a joyride. Okay, so who knows what type of truck killed Edith Keeler in “The City on the Edge of Forever?”
* Shorpy’s been on a board-track spree lately, with a series of photos from the Laurel Speedway in 1925 (1, 2, 3) and the above photo of Donnie Moore in a Duesenberg racer in 1920 in Washington, D.C.
* Over at the landracing.com forums, there’s a 46-page ongoing thread on old LSR photos from Bonneville, and on page 5, we found a few of the Barber-Nichols Steamin’ Demon, which looks to have started life as some sort of VW-based kit car before it was streamlined and fitted with a steam turbine powerplant. It’s apparently on display in Reno and still holds the steam-car record at 145.607 MPH.
* Finally, we haven’t checked in with our friends at BigLorryBlog in a while, and it’s good we did: They recently found several pictures of a mystery truck with a custom Kassbohrer sleeper cab and haven’t been able to discern the truck’s identity or history.
