Mitsubishi Soldiers On With Lancer Evolution MR

Despite Mitsubishi’s difficulties from the very beginning in making much if any headway financially in the U.S., the Tri-Diamond has held fast with their committment to make a go of it in America.  Likewise, Mitsubishi’s approach for the last several years to their performance models is equally consistent and exemplified in the latest example in the Evo line; the Lancer Evolution MR.

Following delays to the advanced tuning of the MR, the Mitsu dynamo has been in showrooms since June and by almost universal accounts is an incredibe vehicle.  One way you can gauge a car’s fun-factor is how much time a reviewer spends talking about cupholders and electronic gizmos inside.  With the MR interior appointments are essentially irrelevant and a mere footnote to the way it handles and moves.  In almost all ways aesthetic, the car varies only slightly, but distinctly, from the lower Lancer model.  Outside the Evo has a big, dark trapezoidal grille, three hood scoops and a big wing and Evolution badge on the back.

Inside, the Evo gets leather and suede Recaro bucket seats that are DEFINITELY a must given the cars cornering abilities and differs from the Lancer’s back seats, which do not fold down because the battery and washer fluid have been moved to behind them to make room for the most significant difference in the two cars; the engine.

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged and inter-cooled engine produces 291 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque which in relation to the car’s displacement is phenomenal and is mated to a slick six-speed twin-clutch Sportronic shift transmission.

While 0-60 times are achieved in the 5.2 seconds range and the car can reach over 160 mph, the car’s real forte is in it’s handling and braking capabilities.  According to testers, pulling in and out of slides is a piece of cake in the all-wheel-drive Evo, only requiring a steely resolve to continue pushing the gas and not jumping on the brakes; the car’s capacity to get itself pointed in the right direction will do the rest.

Not that practicality is a huge consideration for those interested in this car, but despite a limited trunk and fold-down rear seats, it can seat 4 in relative comfort making it not a completely frivolous vehicle.  But assuming you will be driving it with a moderate amount of aggression it does suck down gas (17 mpg combined) and eat tires at an accelerated pace.  And it is pricey, starting at $38,940 and approaching 50 grand with all the bells and whistles.  However, I will note that in terms of performance the Evo MR delivers a better and more affordable overall driving experience than the similar offerings from BMW and Mercedes.

Mercedes-Benz: Circling The Wagons

| понедельник, 7 сентября 2009 г.

Mercedes-Benz, German luxury automaker, has reluctantly revealed its plans for production cut-back at its Vance, Alabama-based production facility. The plant, which employs about 4,000, is primarily responsible for the manufacture of Mercedes’ GL and M-Class SUVs as well as, more recently, the R-class crossover. Effective beginning in August, the reductions include “extended shutdowns” during the holiday season and various modifications to shift length/occurrence.

Largely tight-lipped in regards to plan specifics, a spokeswoman for the plant answered inquiries about motivating factors by saying, “Obviously, we made this decision to stay competitive and guarantee our long-term success.” Admirably, Mercedes has managed to remain largely unscathed by fluctuations in the market and economy since the birth of it’s United States production 11 years ago.

2009 Mercedes SL Roadster Promises Return to Basics

| пятница, 4 сентября 2009 г.

The Mercedes SL has a long and venerable history. Its lineage dates to the 1950s, when the iconic 300SL Gullwing brought the company to the forefront of high performance sports cars. As the years progressed, however, the SL underwent some significant design changes. In the past decade, the SL has been more soccer mom than road warrior, a luxury car better suited to suburban cruising than high-speed racing.

The 2009 redesign promises to change all that, however. The new SL class is leaner, sportier and higher powered than its most recent predecessor. Replacing the marshmallow softness of the exterior lines is a sleek and crisp body that is built with aerodynamics in mind.

Under the hood, the SL is ready to roll. The base models, the V-8 powered SL 550 and the V-12 SL 600 promise more horsepower and more torque than ever before. However, hardcore power enthusiasts may want to hold out for the SL 65 AMG instead.

The new bad boy of Mercedes Benz, the SL 65 AMG is one of the most awaited new car releases in a long time. The 6.0 L V-12 has been tweaked to draw a full 670 horsepower, capable of rocketing the car from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds. This is made possible in part due to the car’s lightweight carbon-fiber composite construction, which reduces the weight by 551 pounds.

Of course, you might have gotten used to the luxury that the SL class has come to represent. Fortunately, a return to sportiness does not mean a loss of luxury. With safety features that include a roll bar that automatically deploys just before a rollover, and technological touches such as Mercedes new AIRSCARF, which gently blows warm air at neck level for top-down winter driving, it is clear that the new SL blends the best of both worlds. After all, if you are going to barrel down the highway at 195 mph, you might as well do it in comfort, right?
